observed: while setting up for a little party down by the beach in Laguna, I arrived early to claim our spot for the day, clean up a little, balloons, tablecloths, chairs, and all that jazz. When I arrived a homeless man nearby was clearly waking himself up with some morning drawing and taking in the ocean vistas. As I was moving around the area setting up, I noticed him going through what was probably a morning routine of sorts. We chatted about the bunnies doing their morning grazing (he is a self-described bunny protector of sorts, often getting into heated arguments with locals who let their dogs chase and attack said bunnies) and about the lovely day that seemed to be braking through the clouds. A little while later he packed up all his belongings onto his small cart. As he got up to walk away, I noticed him stop a few feet away to turn around and survey the area to make sure he hadn't forgotten anything. Such a human and, in my opinion, tender action. No matter how many belongings you may have or how much space your "things" might take up in this world, they are yours and they matter. And we don't want to forget them. I just thought that was sweet and a little poignant to contemplate as I pare down my belongings for a move across the country.
He saw me looking, and he waved a goodbye. See ya later, bunny protector. Have a really great day in Laguna. :)
